Hair types explained
Knowing your natural pattern helps you pick the right shampoo, conditioner and styling products. Most people fall into one of four groups.
Straight
Hair falls flat from root to tip. It tends to get oily faster, because scalp oil travels down the strand easily.
Wavy
Hair forms loose S-shaped bends. It can be prone to frizz and can look flat if products are too heavy.
Curly
Hair forms defined spirals or loops. It is usually drier and benefits from moisture and gentle detangling.
Coily
Hair forms tight coils or zigzags. It is often the driest type and needs rich moisture and low-tension styling.
How to find your hair type
Wash your hair with a gentle shampoo, skip heavy products, and let it air-dry. Look at the natural pattern (straight, wavy, curly or coily). Then check a single strand: if it is hard to feel between your fingers it is fine, if you feel it easily it is medium, and if it feels thick or wiry it is coarse. Your scalp type is how it feels a day or two after washing: oily, balanced, dry or itchy. Once you have your results, browse all our hair care guides for what to try next.
